Caring for your Handmade Persian Rug

How to Care for Your Handmade Persian Rug

Preserve the beauty and lifespan of your Persian rug with easy, effective care. Spot clean spills immediately using mild soap foam and white cloths—avoid harsh chemicals. For deeper cleaning, use natural methods like vinegar or baking soda.

Vacuum weekly or beat your rug the traditional way to remove dust without damaging fibres. Rotate monthly to prevent fading and wear, and air your rug outdoors twice a year to keep it fresh and moisture-free. With proper care, your rug will stay vibrant, soft, and heirloom-worthy for generations.

1. SPOT CLEAN spills immediately
  • Scoop up any residue with a spoon (not a sharp object).
  • Dilute a little dishwashing liquid (without bleach or harsh chemicals) in warm water. Apply the foam to the stain and allow it to be absorbed.
  • Use a white cotton towel or rag to rub gently into the stain, then use a clean rag/towel to absorb the moisture.
  • Place a bowl under the stain to elevate the area to help it air-dry.
  • (For strong stains such as urine, use a mixture of warm water and vinegar, or vinegar and baking soda).
2. DUST REMOVAL
  • Vacuum weekly: flip your rug and vacuum the back to dislodge dirt and discourage nesting. Then slowly vacuum the front of your rug in the direction of the fibres.
  • Alternatively, use the traditional method of beating the rug twice a year. Shake the rug, then hang it and give the back of the rug a good beating with a broomstick. Hand-sweep the rug in the direction of the fibres (this method is best for a hand-hooked rug which could snag on a vacuum cleaner).
  • You can also flip the rug in place, lift up one section at a time and beat it. Be sure to remove the dirt that falls to the floor under each section before moving on to the next.
  • Shake the rug gently to untangle the fringe, do not comb it.
3. ROTATE

Rotate your rug once a month to prevent uneven wear and fading. This also prevents heavy furniture from crushing the fibres.

4. REMOVE MOISTURE

Air your rug outside twice a year to prevent a buildup of moisture and insect damage. Hang your rug out on a dry day, preferably with a slight breeze.
