Caring for your Handmade Persian Rug

Caring for your Handmade Persian Rug

Your lovingly hand-crafted Persian rug will last a lifetime if cared for properly. Follow the simple steps below and enjoy your beautifully practical investment.

1. SPOT CLEAN spills immediately
  • Scoop up any residue with a spoon (not a sharp object).
  • Dilute a little dishwashing liquid (without bleach or harsh chemicals) in warm water. Apply the foam to the stain and allow it to be absorbed.
  • Use a white cotton towel or rag to rub gently into the stain, then use a clean rag/towel to absorb the moisture.
  • Place a bowl under the stain to elevate the area to help it air-dry.
  • (For strong stains such as urine, use a mixture of warm water and vinegar, or vinegar and baking soda).
2. DUST REMOVAL
  • Vacuum weekly: flip your rug and vacuum the back to dislodge dirt and discourage nesting. Then slowly vacuum the front of your rug in the direction of the fibres.
  • Alternatively, use the traditional method of beating the rug twice a year. Shake the rug, then hang it and give the back of the rug a good beating with a broomstick. Hand-sweep the rug in the direction of the fibres (this method is best for a hand-hooked rug which could snag on a vacuum cleaner).
  • You can also flip the rug in place, lift up one section at a time and beat it. Be sure to remove the dirt that falls to the floor under each section before moving on to the next.
  • Shake the rug gently to untangle the fringe, do not comb it.
3. ROTATE

Rotate your rug once a month to prevent uneven wear and fading. This also prevents heavy furniture from crushing the fibres.

4. REMOVE MOISTURE

Air your rug outside twice a year to prevent a buildup of moisture and insect damage. Hang your rug out on a dry day, preferably with a slight breeze.

5. GO PRO!

Get your rug professionally cleaned every five years – more frequently if it is in a high-traffic area.

6. STORING YOUR RUG

If you need to store your rug for a period of time, roll it tightly against the direction of the pile. Tie it securely with string, then wrap in airtight polythene. Store in a dry place.
